ICHI-GO ICHI-E — “One Encounter, One Lifetime”

This design is based on a reinterpretation of a historical Coptic limestone cross dating from approximately the 4th to 8th century CE.

Rather than directly reproducing the original artifact, the proportions of the cross have been reconstructed into an equal-armed geometric form, emphasizing symmetry, balance, and sacred spatial harmony. This transformation preserves the symbolic essence of the original Coptic design while presenting it through a contemporary minimalist aesthetic.

The original cross emerged from the highly syncretic cultural environment of Late Antique Egypt, where Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and early Christian traditions coexisted and influenced one another. During this period, Alexandria functioned as one of the Mediterranean world’s major intellectual centers, where theology, philosophy, mysticism, and science intersected.

The spiral motifs carved into the cross are believed to represent stylized grapevines — an important symbol in early Christianity associated with mystical union, spiritual abundance, and the Eucharist. The radiating forms extending from the central solar or floral motif suggest divine light expanding outward into the cosmos.

The equal-armed structure further evokes ancient cosmological symbolism related to the four cardinal directions and the intermediary points between them, concepts shared across numerous sacred traditions including Hermetic, Greco-Roman, and early mystical systems.

This ancient symbolic language is paired with the Japanese concept “Ichigo Ichie” (一期一会), a phrase rooted in Zen-influenced tea culture and commonly translated as:

“One encounter, one lifetime.”

The phrase expresses the understanding that every meeting exists only once and can never be perfectly repeated.
Each moment is therefore regarded as sacred and complete in itself.

Although separated by geography and theology, both Coptic spirituality and Japanese philosophy contemplate impermanence, presence, transcendence, and the relationship between the finite and the eternal.

This work explores the point at which these civilizations intersect.

Not merely a decorative object, but a meditation on memory, encounter, sacred geometry, and the continuity of human spiritual expression across cultures and centuries.
